Connecting a Laptop Computer to a
Classroom Data Projector

There are two types of data projector connections in North Central College classrooms. The first is a wall plate where the laptop computer connects to the projector using a cable plugged into an outlet on the wall.

The second is an automatic switching system where the laptop connects to a cable on the computer cart.

Please do not unplug ANY cable from the back of any classroom equipment or from the connection plate on the wall.

Follow the steps for the type of data projector connection in your classroom

Automatic Switch

A. Using the remote control, turn on the classroom data projector .

B. When the data projector warms up, make sure it is on the "computer 1" input (or input A on some models) . If not, use the remote control to select "computer 1."

C. Connect your laptop computer to the loose HD 15 cable laying on the computer workstation.

D. Turn on your laptop computer. The switcher will automatically sense the laptop computer signal and override the desktop computer.

E. If the image is not displayed on the screen, you must turn on the external display port on your laptop computer. The North Central laptop computers use the following key strokes: Hold down the FN key and press F4.
These keystrokes cycle through the three settings on most laptop computers.

Pressing these keys more than once will do the following:
a. Show the image on both the monitor and the external display.
b. Show the image on the external display only.
c. Show the image on the monitor only.

If it still does not display on the projector, use the projector remote control and change the input to "Computer 2" (you may be in a classroom without an automatic switcher).

Disconnect the laptop computer to view the display from the desktop computer.

Wall Plate

1. Locate the loose end of the HD 15 cable that is plugged into the laptop wall plate.

2. Plug the loose end of the HD 15 cable into the HD 15 port on your laptop.

3. Turn on the data projector using the remote control.

4. Once the data projector warms up, use the remote control to select "Input 2"
This may be labeled "computer 2" depending upon the remote control.

Under no circumstances should anyone unplug a cable from the back of the computer or from the connection plates on the wall.
